I’m sure there’s been plenty of ups and downs during 2023, but hey, you’re alive, breathing, and healthy (hopefully). Speaking of which, if there’s anything to be thankful for this year, it should be your well-being. Hyundai understands that there’s nothing more important than you and your loved ones’ well-being, which is why the Korean auto manufacturer puts the utmost care, research, and detail into their Safety Systems. Today, we’ll go over Hyundai’s suite of Safety features, also known as Hyundai SmartSense, so that you can be prepared for your potential Hyundai purchase here at Safford Hyundai Fairfax, Virginia!
What is Hyundai SmartSense?
Hyundai SmartSense is Hyundai’s suite of safety and driver assist features designed to keep you and your precious passengers safe on the road. A team of intelligent sensors, cameras, and sonar technology work together, keeping an eye out for danger and obstacles 24/7. We’ve broken down these technologies below:
Driving Safety

- Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection (FCA-Ped)
When the FCA-Ped system detects a vehicle or pedestrian in your path, it warns you of a potential collision. If you don’t start to stop in time, the system may automatically apply braking. - Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA)
If your Hyundai vehicle detects a car in your blind spot while your turning signal is activated, it will alert you and may automatically apply the left or right front brake before you change lanes. - Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM)
The digital instrument cluster displays a live video feed of your blind spot from the side-view mirror cameras when you use your turn signals. - Lane Following Assist (LFA)
This feature utilizes the front camera to detect lane markers on the road, keeping your vehicle centered inside the lane. - Lane Keeping Assist (LKA)
Your Hyundai warns you through Audio and Visual Cues if your vehicle drifts out of the lane without signaling. LKA will apply corrective steering assistance to keep you inside the lane if necessary. - Driver Attention Warning (DAW)
DAW monitors your driving patterns to detect drowsy or inattentive driving. Once detected, the system will warn you through an audio warning and a visual warning message on the instrument cluster. - High Beam Assist
This feature detects oncoming vehicles and switches from normal to high and low beams accordingly.
Driving Convenience

- Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop & Go
While traveling at a speed set by your preferences, this feature employs radar to maintain a safe distance from the car ahead. After the system slows your Hyundai to a stop, it will reactivate if the vehicle in front moves within 3 seconds. - Highway Driving Assist (HDA)
When actively engaged with Smart Cruise Control or Lane Following Assist, HDA automatically helps keep you centered in your lane and traveling at a safe distance behind the car ahead. It also can keep you driving at the right speeds, automatically setting your pace based on GPS and highway data. - Highway Driving Assist II (HDA-II)
When actively engaged with Smart Cruise Control or Lane Following Assist, HDA-II adjusts steering and speed to help keep you centered in your lane and traveling at a safe distance behind the car ahead. With Lane Change Assist, when you use your turn signals at 37 mph or higher, it automatically changes lanes for you. It can also adjust your position in the lane if a vehicle in the next lane drives too close. And at lower speeds, it can react to a vehicle that suddenly cuts you off. - Downhill Braking Control (DBC)
When activated, DBC will automatically slow your vehicle as it heads downhill. It will also maintain a slower speed so that you can focus on steering safety to avoid obstacles caused by traffic, weather, or road conditions.
Parking Safety

- Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA)
When you’re going in reverse, RCCA lets you know if its sensors detect a vehicle approaching from the left or right. It may even apply the brakes automatically if needed. - Ultrasonic Rear Occupant Alert (Ultrasonic ROA)
As the engine is turned off, a visual warning in the gauge cluster reminds you to check the rear seats before exiting. Additionally, overhead ultrasonic sensors monitor the backseat area to minimize the risk of a child or pet accidentally being left inside after the vehicle is parked and locked. If sensors detect movement, the horn will think, lights will flash and your smartphone will receive an alert through Bluelink. - Rear Occupant Alert (ROA)
Gives you a reminder to check the backseat area to ensure a child or pet isn’t accidentally left inside after you park. - Safe Exit Assist (SEA)
Warns the driver when the vehicle is parked and its radar detects a vehicle approaching from behind. If necessary, it will override attempts to deactivate the Electronic Child Safety Lock until it’s safe for your child to open the door.
Parking Convenience

- Reverse Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist (PCA-R)
When reversing in a parking spot, you’ll receive an audio warning when sensors detect a potential collision. It may even apply the brakes if necessary. - Surround View Monitor (SVM)
Shows you a bird’s-eye view from the sides and rear of your vehicle on your touchscreen display. - Premium Remote Smart Parking Assust (RSPA)
RSPA enables your Hyundai car to park itself, even when you’re not inside. It can also parallel park, and enter into and exit out of parking spots with a press and hold of your Smart Key button. - Parking Distance Warning-Front and Reverse
Ultrasonic sensors in the front and back can help detect nearby objects you might not be able to see from the driver’s seat.
